Dunrovin Provides
San Miguel Summer Camps
San Miguel students from Minneapolis, Chicago and Racine, Wisconsin, come to Dunrovin and learn about archery, canoeing, bugs, beaches, cooking over a fire, and other summer pleasures. They also learn that living a Christian life is fun.
The Christian Brothers have opened San Miguel Schools to serve families whose children need more attention than can be provided at public schools. San Miguel Schools work with the students and their families to strengthen the local community, help the students achieve academic success, and encourage belief in themselves and their cultural story. "What value does Dunrovin have for our students?" reflected Dean Johnson, former principal of Chicago's Back of the Yards campus. "Dunrovin gives our kids the opportunity to be outside and free - a polar opposite of their urban setting. Their spirits and souls take deep sigh of relief, and then soar.
"Coming to Dunrovin is a transformative experience for our kids. It is not simply that we see the metaphorical ‘other side' of a student. Rather, it is like the seed, frozen in the ground, that bursts to life in spring. They are free, if even for a few days, from the trappings of poverty, violence and urban blight," he continued.
"When we see a higher set of possibilities - we choose them. It's the kids who never see the alternative who cannot choose it," Johnson said.
One Brother who has spoken to San Miguel students during retreats, added, "These young people return to their homes and neighborhoods with a new, healthier perspective on life. We sincerely believe that the end result is increased faith and social justice as they learn positive ways of relating to themselves, their communities, and their environment." See photos HERE.
A really nice newpaper article appeared in the St. Paul Pioneer Press on the camps. Read it HERE. A video was made of our 2009 San Miguel Camps. Its on YouTube - see it HERE .
Dunrovin summer camps depend on the generous donations of people who want to have a life-changing impact on children. These donations also touch their families and communities. Please prayerfully consider joining us by making a donation to San Miguel Summer Camps.
