Ash Wednesday fell on February 12 in 1964. This day also marks when the first retreat was held at Dunrovin Christian Brothers Retreat Center. Youth from Cretin High School (now Cretin Derham Hall) came out with Lasallian brothers and teachers for fellowship and a deepening of faith.
Now, 50 years later, Dunrovin has changed over the years. Instead of simply being open to Cretin High School students, the retreat center serves as a rejuvenating place for numerous types of groups. Businesses, churches, private retreatans, and family reunions all enjoy the beautiful woods and St. Croix River while focusing on their own diverse purposes. Whether it is to relax, adventure, study, or socialize, Dunrovin serves all who come to its doors.
However, Dunrovin has remained true to its first mission. It continues to serve and minister to youth. Cretin Derham and other high schools still return every year. Youth retreats for junior and senior high are filled with young adults who long for a step into deeper faith. San Miguel students and alum from inner-city Chicago experience nature and exploration during summer camps. High school students that embark on DLITE or LEAD participate in leadership and team-building that stretches them in an exhilarating way.
Thus, on this day when Dunrovin celebrates 50 years of retreats, the staff and board can look back both to see the exciting changes and integrity to the youth-centered mission. Jerome Meeds, current director, said, “Let’s celebrate together God’s goodness; 50 years of touching lives! We thank God for the Christian Brothers and all who have served at Dunrovin over the 50 years.”
